What is a new generation movie?
Its a big question in the minds of people who are still confused with the changing habits of malayalam cinema. It all came to notice when the film Chaapa Kurish came to screens in 2011. The film told a story that can happen to a young man due to his careless attitude and life. What made it to stand apart from other malayalam movies is the way it was captured in camera. Apart from using normal motion picture high definition cameras, it was shot in canon 7D cameras. All that and again the change comes. The use of language and comparison to real life events were so high that it made people curious to watch this movie.
Then all the mess started with more and more such movies coming into life. Hit makers of new generation movies like cocktail, Trivandrum lodge, Kilipoy, etc. came to scene. Evergreen actors and producers finding it difficult to bring back the old glory of malayalam cinema is doing their best to criticise these movies. Superstars' movies going on busting like balloons and new faces charming the screens are also a common trend now.
Bringing more of the current trends of youth in movies is the key ingredient for the success of these directors and producers. Making a low budget film with a titanic publicity in social media gives a successful life for the movies.
Meanwhile family entertainers are also being released in bulk. Celluloid, Diamond Necklace, and the award winning Ustad Hotel are also doing their role in keeping up the old decorum of malayalam cinema. Malayalam movie industry has seen a release of 82 movies and 9 dubbed movies from other languages in the year 2013. Its a surprise to see almost 100 movies has been released in 6 months in this small state. Where are these stories coming from. Then we will notice that out of this 82 more than 70 has no story to be precise. Flop movies like Kilipoy, Ne ko njaa cha, Bachelor party etc. doesn't have any thing to do with a story. its all just a set up of foul language and bad habits. most of the new generation movies are the silent promoters of marijuana and cigarettes etc. and to escape, they will show a notice that they don't have anything to do with the things shown in these movies as if they did't know where all these scenes came from in this movie.
In the past, using foul languages and words was considered a negative in cinema. But now the trend had changed. Youngsters flock for those movies in which the hero or the heroine uses the maximum number of bad words. Censoring of these words with small peep noise is also considered a heavenly thing now in movies. This let the viewers to guess the word with the lip movement of the characters. Finding the word gives immense satisfaction to them. Adult only certification for these movies mark their place in the young minds. What ever the case be, new generation movies has brought a mega change in malayalam movies and its views.
As a good movie enthusiast, I consider this boom in new generation films a virus that needs to be killed as fast as we can. Or else its going to infest the coming generation of Kerala youth.
HISHAM.
